Creating and editing a student

Setting up your students means that you can stay on top of your data, and effectively track student progress across a range of assessments. In this article, you will learn how to edit a student and create a student on the platform.

Automatic student identifier

When you upload a submission, our platform uses AI to automatically detect the student name for the assessment. In order to maximise the chances of the student name being successfully extracted, you should do the following:

  • Include the student name on the first page of the submission
  • Include the student name in the PDF file name

Once the submission is processed, the student name will appear on the submission on the ‘Marks and submissions’ page.

As you can see, the student’s name on the top submission in the screenshot above is ‘Demo student’.

This means that there is currently no student linked to the submission.

If you’d like to link a student to the submission, double click on the ‘pen icon’ to edit the name.

Once updated, if the name of the student already exists in your account, then the submission will be linked to that pre-existing student.

IMPORTANT NOTE - If your student’s name does not match the string that you’ve used for that student in your Marking.ai account, then the student will not get linked to that submission. A new student will get created.

For example:

  • If I change the name to Demo Student, and there is no student already called ‘Demo student’ in the account, then a new student will be created and linked to that submission.
  • If I change the name to Demo Student, and there is already a student called Demo Student in the account, then the pre-existing student called Demo Student will be linked to that submission.
  • If I have a student in the account called Demo Student, and then I change the name of the submission to ‘Dem Student’ (missing the ‘o’ in Demo), then because there is no match, a new student called Dem Student will be created, and linked to the submission.

Viewing students

In order to view a list of your students, navigate to the ‘Students’ page in the left hand navigation bar. You will then be able to view a list of your students in a table.

The table shows:

  • The student’s average across all of their assessments
  • The total number of submissions linked to that student

Clicking the three dots on the student record will allow you to:

  • View a list of all the submissions that student has made
  • Edit the student’s name
  • Delete the student (the submissions won’t be deleted, but they will no longer be associated with that student).

Creating a student

The best way to create a student is to upload a submission for them, that contains either:

  • Their name on the first page of the submission document
  • Their name in the file name

Upon upload, the student will then be created and associated to that submission. You can edit the student’s name from within the ‘Marks and submissions’ page or the ‘Students’ page, as outlined above.

Deleting students

In order to delete a student, visit the ‘Student’s page and click the three dots next to that student.

After selecting delete, you will have the option to confirm the deletion of that student. The submissions will remain in the platform, but will no longer be associated to that student.

A note about data protection

The student name is the only piece of information that Marking.ai collects about the student. Marking.ai does not use the student’s name for anything other than allowing the user to identify submissions. If you’d like for the student name to not be used on your platform, we encourage you to use another form of identifier, such as exam number or submission id.

For more information, please refer to our Privacy Policy and our Data compliance FAQs.
