Editing extracted questions
When Marking.ai extracts questions from your paper, you can edit any of them — either during the initial review or any time after. This article shows you how.
Opening a question for editing
From your assessment detail page, find the question you want to edit and click the edit icon next to it. The Edit Q… dialog opens, with the current contents already populated.
What you can change
There are four things you can edit on a question:
Question text
The wording of the question as it appears on the paper. Tables, equations, headings, and lists are all supported — use the formatting toolbar in the editor for richer content.
Question type
What kind of question it is — multiple choice, short answer, essay, calculation, and so on. Pick the closest match, or pick Other… and type a custom type if nothing fits.
Marks
The total marks available for the question. Make sure this matches the paper — if it says “[3 marks]” on the paper, this should be 3.
If you change the marks on a question that has already been marked, Marking.ai will warn you if any existing student marks would now exceed the new maximum, and offer to cap them automatically.
Mark scheme
The guidance Marking.ai should follow when marking this specific question. You can describe how the marks should be split, list acceptable answers, include partial-credit rules, or paste in a rubric table. The richer this is, the more accurate the marking.
Saving your changes
When you’re done, you have two options:
- Save — saves your edit but doesn’t re-mark anything. Use this when you’re still setting up the assessment or when no submissions have been marked yet.
- Save & re-mark — saves your edit and re-runs the AI marker for this question across every submission you’ve already marked. Use this when you’ve changed something that should change the marks (for example, you’ve updated the mark scheme).
If you only fix a typo or tidy up wording, Save is usually all you need. If you’ve changed marks or mark scheme guidance, Save & re-mark keeps your students’ marks in sync with the new setup.
What if a question is completely wrong or missing?
If a question shouldn’t be there at all (e.g. Marking.ai picked up a heading as a question), you can edit its text down to something accurate, set marks to 0, and ignore it. If a question is completely missing, the easiest fix is usually to upload a clearer paper or marking guide and let Marking.ai re-extract — see Replacing your marking guide.

FAQs
Will editing a question lose any marks my students have already received?
No — student marks aren’t deleted. If your change reduces the available marks, you’ll see a warning and Marking.ai will offer to cap any marks that would now be over the maximum.
Can I edit a question after submissions have been marked?
Yes. Use Save & re-mark to re-run the AI across affected submissions, so the marks reflect your new setup.
Can I add a brand new question that Marking.ai didn’t pick up?
Not from the edit dialog directly. The best route is to upload a clearer paper or marking guide and let Marking.ai re-extract. If you’re stuck, get in touch and we’ll help.
What’s the difference between question type and subtype?
Question type is the broad shape — short answer, essay, calculation, etc. Subtype lets you be more specific (e.g. “compare and contrast” or “definition”). Subtype is optional, and most of the time the default is fine.
