Member roles
Every member of a school workspace has a role that determines what they can do. This article explains each role and how to change someone’s role.
The four roles
Owner
Full access. There’s typically one Owner per workspace — usually the person who signed up for the School plan.
An Owner can:
- Everything an Admin can do, plus
- Manage billing (through the sales contact)
- Change the workspace Owner (with help from our team)
Admin
Day-to-day workspace management. Use this for heads of department, IT leads, or anyone responsible for running Marking.ai across your school.
An Admin can:
- See the pooled balance and per-teacher usage
- Invite teachers to the workspace
- Change other members’ roles (except Owner)
- Remove members from the workspace
- See the member roster
- Do everything a Teacher can do
Teacher (Member)
The role most teachers in your workspace will have. Full Marking.ai access for their own marking work.
A Teacher can:
- Mark, share, and export their own submissions
- Manage their own assessments, students, and classes
- Use Marko
- See their own settings and preferences
- Use the pooled allowance for marking
Teachers cannot see other teachers’ work or change workspace settings.
Viewer
Read-only access — a rare role used for occasional observers (e.g. an exam moderator). Viewers can see their own data but can’t mark or share.
Changing someone’s role
If you’re an Owner or Admin, from Settings → Workspace:
- Find the member in the roster.
- Click the actions menu on their row.
- Choose Change role and pick the new role.
The change is immediate. The member will see their new role next time they open Marking.ai.
Owner-only actions
A few things are reserved for the Owner:
- Changing the Owner role itself (we can help with this)
- Billing changes via the sales contact
Most workspaces only ever need to use the Owner role for setup. Day-to-day management can be handled by Admins.
Removing someone
From the roster’s actions menu, choose Remove from workspace. Their data stays with their personal Marking.ai account — you’re just removing them from the workspace, not deleting anything.

FAQs
Can a workspace have more than one Owner?
Not today — each workspace has exactly one Owner. Admins can do most things short of billing changes.
What if I want to transfer Ownership?
Reach out at connect@marking.ai and we’ll help you transfer it. We do this carefully because billing changes hands.
Can I set a default role for new invites?
Not today — you pick a role each time you invite. Most invites end up as Teacher.
