Creating and managing classes
A class in Marking.ai is a label you can attach to students — like “10B Biology” or “Year 12 English Lit”. Once a student is in a class, you can filter for them, bulk-act on the class, and see class-level reports.
This article covers how classes work.
Where classes come from
Marking.ai doesn’t have a separate “create a class” screen. Instead, classes are created on the fly when you add them to a student:
- In the New student dialog — type a class name in the Classes field and press Enter.
- In the Edit student dialog — add a new class the same way.
- In your CSV import — include a classes column when you import.
- In bulk — select students from the Students page and use the Assign class bulk action.
The first time you type a class name, Marking.ai remembers it. Next time you start typing in any Classes field, it autocompletes.
A student can be in multiple classes
There’s no limit on how many classes a student can belong to. Use this when a student is in your subject class, a tutor group, and a club, for example — add them to all three.
Filtering by class
On the Students page, use the filter controls at the top to view just students in a particular class. The list filters live as you change the value.
You can also filter your dashboard on the home page by class context to focus your view.
Bulk actions on a class
From the Students page, you can select all students in a class (or any group of students) and:
- Assign class — add them all to a new class
- Set year — update year for all of them at once
- Archive — move them all to archived (e.g. end of year)
See Bulk actions across students.
Renaming or removing a class
Classes live on student records, so to rename a class:
- Filter the Students page by the old class name.
- Bulk-select everyone.
- Use Assign class to add them to the new class, then edit each student to remove the old one (or filter and remove via the Edit dialog).
We’re working on a more direct way to manage classes — in the meantime, this approach gets it done.

FAQs
Can I share results with a whole class at once?
Yes — use the bulk share action from the submissions table for an assessment. See Bulk-sharing a whole class.
Why do classes show up in my dashboard filters?
Filtering by class lets you see just the metrics, recent assessments, and recently marked submissions for that group. Useful when you teach multiple classes.
What’s the difference between a class and a year?
Year is a single value per student (e.g. “Year 10”). Class is a label you can apply many of. Use year for cohort filtering, classes for groupings within a year.
