The Mark details workspace
The Mark details workspace is where you’ll spend the most time in Marking.ai. It’s the screen for reviewing a single student’s submission — their work alongside the marks, the AI’s reasoning, and your editing controls.
This article gives you a tour.
Getting there
Open the Mark details workspace by clicking any row in a submissions table:
- The submissions table on an assessment detail page
- The list of recent submissions on your home page
- A direct link from the Activity screen
- An entry from Marko (“open Jane’s biology submission”)
What’s on the page
There are four main areas:
The submission view
On the left, you’ll see the student’s actual work — the PDF or image they submitted. You can scroll, zoom, and move between pages as you’d expect.
The marks and feedback panel
On the right, each question shows:
- The question text
- The student’s extracted answer
- The mark awarded (e.g. 4/5) and a short rationale explaining why
- A feedback block with teacher-facing comments
- Edit controls for the mark and the feedback
This is where most of your reviewing happens.
The right rail
A narrower column on the far right offers:
- An overall confidence indicator — how sure Marking.ai is about this submission’s marking. See Understanding confidence indicators.
- A quick-jump question list — click to scroll to any question
- Optional Marko prompts — quick actions like “Explain this mark” or “Help me prepare feedback”
The header
At the top: the student’s name, total score, the assessment, and the submission switcher — use the arrows or dropdown to move between students without going back.
Moving between submissions
There are three ways to move from one student to the next:
- Arrow buttons in the header (← previous, → next)
- The submission switcher dropdown in the header
- Keyboard shortcuts (forward/back arrows when not in a text field)
Editing
Most things on this page are editable. The key things to know:
- Click a mark to edit it inline — see Editing a mark
- Click the feedback block to edit it — see Editing AI feedback
- Click the edit icon next to a question to change the question itself, the mark scheme, or the marks available — see Editing extracted questions

FAQs
Why am I being shown the AI’s reasoning?
So you can decide whether to trust the mark. Marking.ai is meant to support your judgement, not replace it — the rationale exists so you can spot anything that needs a second look.
What if I disagree with a mark?
Edit it directly. Your edit is the final mark — see Editing a mark.
Can I see this submission in a print-friendly format?
Yes — use the Export options in the assessment’s actions menu to get a clean PDF report. See Exporting a submission report PDF.
