Marko's memory: what it remembers

Marko quietly learns a few things about how you like to teach so that future marking and conversations feel more like you. This article explains what Marko remembers, how it learns, and how that memory is used.

For how to view or edit what Marko knows, see Editing or clearing Marko’s memory.

What gets remembered

Marko’s memory is split into three named slots:

Marking strictness

How strict you want the AI to be when marking. Marko picks up on patterns — if you regularly override marks downward (or upward), Marko notices and may suggest saving that preference.

Feedback tone

The default tone for AI-generated feedback. Warm and encouraging, brief and businesslike, or somewhere in between — Marko remembers your preference and applies it on future submissions.

Core memory

A free-form text area for anything else that’s useful. “I teach IB Biology HL, Year 12.” “Always award marks for showing workings.” “Don’t penalise British spellings in US students.” Anything that helps Marko and the marking engine understand how you prefer to mark.

How Marko learns

There are three ways something ends up in Marko’s memory:

  • You tell Marko directly. “Remember I prefer strict marking.” Marko saves it.
  • You set it manually in the memory editor. See Editing or clearing Marko’s memory.
  • Marko notices a pattern. If Marko spots a strong pattern in your overrides or chat (e.g. you’ve consistently softened the tone of AI feedback), Marko will ask whether to save that preference. You can say yes or no.

How memory gets used

Marko’s memory is shared with the marking engine. Strictness and feedback tone in particular affect automatic marking on new submissions — not just Marko’s chat responses. That means a small change in your preferences ripples through your whole experience.

What Marko doesn’t remember

Marko’s memory is intentionally narrow. We don’t remember:

  • Specific marks you’ve awarded
  • Particular students or assessments
  • Your conversation history beyond the current session

The goal is to know enough to be helpful, and no more.

Privacy

Marko’s memory is private to your account — nobody else can see it. You can clear it at any time. For details, see Editing or clearing Marko’s memory.

FAQs

Will Marko ever save something without asking?

Marko saves preferences you explicitly state (“remember I prefer X”) without re-asking. For pattern-based suggestions, Marko asks before saving.

Can I see what Marko has saved?

Yes — in Settings → Marko’s memory. See Editing or clearing Marko’s memory.

Will memory carry over if I move to a paid plan?

Yes — memory belongs to your account, not your plan.
