The Marko avatar — opening the panel from anywhere
Marko is available from every page in Marking.ai. The way you get to them is the Marko avatar in the top-right corner of the screen.
Where the avatar lives
Look at the top-right of any page. The avatar is a small circular icon showing Marko. Clicking it opens (or closes) the Marko panel.
Opening the panel
Click the avatar to open the Marko panel. It slides in from the right side of the screen, sitting alongside the main content (rather than covering it). When it’s open, the avatar shows a highlighted ring so you can see the panel is active.
When the panel is open:
- Your main content reflows to make room — nothing important is hidden
- The chat input sits at the bottom
- The conversation history is above
- The current scope (which assessment, submission, or student you’re looking at) is shown as a chip near the top — see The scope chip — Marko knows where you are
Closing the panel
Click the avatar again to toggle the panel closed, or use the close (X) button in the panel header. Your main content reflows back.
The Marko hero (home page only)
On your home page, Marko also has a hero state — a larger greeting with a chat input and suggested prompts in the centre of the page. The hero is the default state of your home page when the panel is closed. Opening the panel docks Marko to the side and reveals the dashboard underneath. See Your home page: Marko hero and dashboard.
Mutual exclusion with the sidebar
If your screen is narrow, the Marko panel and the navigation sidebar can’t both be open at the same time — opening one closes the other. On wider screens both fit fine and stay independent.
Managing Marko’s memory from the panel
The panel header (Marko’s name and avatar) is a link — click it to jump straight to Settings → Marko’s memory, where you can view, edit, or clear what Marko remembers. See Editing or clearing Marko’s memory.

FAQs
Why does the Marko panel look bigger on mobile?
On smaller screens, the panel takes the full width to keep the chat readable, so it covers the page rather than reflowing it. The avatar position is the same — top-right.
Can I move the Marko avatar somewhere else?
Not today — the avatar is always top-right so it’s predictable. Drop us feedback if there’s a position you’d prefer.
Where did the avatar go on the Settings pages?
The avatar only appears on pages that host the Marko panel. Some standalone layouts (like the Settings area) don’t mount the panel, so the avatar hides there rather than opening a panel that isn’t available.
