Reviewing extracted questions
After you create an assessment, Marking.ai reads through the paper and pulls out each question. Before you start marking, we ask you to take a quick look and confirm everything looks right.
This article walks you through that review.
When this happens
Once your paper and marking guide are processed, your assessment status changes to Needs review. You’ll see a banner on the assessment page that says “Questions extracted — please review.”
This is your chance to spot-check the extraction before any submissions get marked.
What to look for
The questions Marking.ai extracted are listed on the page, with the question number, question text, marks available, and mark scheme entry for each one. Skim through and check:
- Did Marking.ai catch every question? Cross-check against your original paper. Missed questions are the most common thing to spot.
- Are the marks right? The marks available for each question should match what’s printed on the paper.
- Does the question text look right? Tables, equations, and special formatting should have come through cleanly.
- Does the mark scheme entry make sense for each question? Marking.ai pairs questions with their guidance — make sure the pairings line up.
For longer papers, focus your review on the marks-heavy questions — those are the ones where a small error has the biggest effect on totals.
If something needs fixing
Click the edit icon next to any question to open it for editing. You can fix the question text, marks available, type, or mark scheme entry. See Editing extracted questions for the full guide.
If a whole question is missing, the easiest fix is usually to replace the marking guide or paper with a clearer version and let Marking.ai re-extract. See Replacing your marking guide.
Confirming the questions
Once you’re happy with what’s there, click the blue Confirm Questions button at the top of the page.
Your assessment status flips to Ready and the Upload submissions button becomes available. You’re good to start marking.
Can I change my mind after confirming?
Yes — you can edit individual questions any time, even after submissions have been marked. Just open the assessment and click the edit icon on the question you want to change. Marking.ai will offer to re-mark affected submissions if needed.

FAQs
Do I have to review the questions?
We strongly recommend it. Marking.ai is good at extraction but not perfect, and a quick review catches problems early. The marking won’t start until you click Confirm Questions.
What if Marking.ai extracted too many questions — like it picked up a heading as a question?
You can edit the extracted question to fix the text and the marks. If something was extracted that shouldn’t have been at all, get in touch and we’ll help.
Can I review later?
Yes. The assessment stays in Needs review until you confirm, so you can come back any time. Marking won’t begin until you’ve confirmed.
