Class performance and mark distribution
The Overview tab on an assessment is your starting point for understanding how your class did. This article walks through what’s on it and what each part is telling you.
Getting to the Overview tab
Open any assessment with at least one marked submission and click the Overview tab. (The tab doesn’t appear until you’ve marked at least one submission — there’s nothing to summarise before then.)
The metric cards
Across the top of the tab, you’ll see at-a-glance numbers:
- Average mark — mean across all marked submissions
- Pass rate — percentage of students at or above your set pass threshold
- Students marked — how many out of your total class have been marked so far
Use these for the quick “how did we do” gut check.
The distribution chart
A histogram showing how your students’ marks are spread — a clump in the middle, a long tail at the bottom, two peaks (the dreaded bimodal), whatever the shape is.
Things to look for:
- A tight cluster suggests the assessment was well-pitched
- A wide spread can mean it differentiated well — or that the marking criteria varied a lot
- A bimodal shape (two peaks) often means some students got the underlying concept and others didn’t — worth following up
The pass threshold control
Drag the threshold slider (or type in a value) to set your own pass mark. The chart updates live so you can see what percentage of the class would pass at different cut-offs.
This is great for moderating boundaries before sharing results — you can experiment with where to draw the line.
Students needing support
At the bottom of the tab, you’ll see a list of students whose results suggest they could do with some extra help. The list highlights students who are clearly below the rest of the class, or who have a pattern of struggling.
Click any student to jump to their submission. From there, you can edit feedback, re-mark, or share their results.

FAQs
Why doesn’t the Overview tab show?
It only appears once you’ve marked at least one submission. As soon as you have, the tab will be there.
Does the chart update as I edit marks?
Yes — if you change a mark in the Mark details workspace, the chart and metrics here update next time you load the tab.
Can I export the chart?
Indirectly — the chart shows up in the Class summary PDF. See Exporting a class summary.
