Replacing your marking guide
If the marking guide you uploaded wasn’t quite right — the wrong file, a poor scan, or a draft when you meant to use the final — you can swap it out for a new one. This article shows you how.
How to replace the marking guide
- Open the assessment.
- Open the assessment card’s actions menu (the ⋯ button).
- Click Replace marking guide.
- Upload the new guide file (PDF or image).
Marking.ai uploads the new file and re-extracts the questions and mark scheme entries.
What happens to existing data
Replacing the guide affects:
- Questions — these get re-extracted. You’ll be asked to review and confirm again.
- Mark scheme entries on questions — these get refreshed from the new guide.
It doesn’t touch:
- Existing student submissions — they stay in place
- Existing marks and feedback — they’re preserved
- Share links you’ve already created
If you want existing marks to reflect the new guide, you’ll need to re-mark the affected questions. See Save & re-mark: re-running a single question.
When to replace vs. edit individual questions
- Replace if the whole guide was wrong, or if many questions are off
- Edit individual questions if only one or two need fixing — see Editing extracted questions

FAQs
Will my existing marks change after I replace the guide?
Not automatically. Existing marks stay until you use Save & re-mark to refresh them.
Can I undo a replacement?
Not directly — once you replace, the old guide is gone. If you upload the wrong replacement, just replace again with the correct file.
What if my new guide has different questions than the old one?
That’s fine — Marking.ai re-extracts based on the new guide. You’ll be asked to review and confirm before any new marking happens.
