Asking Marko to do things

Marko isn’t just for asking questions. Marko can also take real actions on your behalf — marking submissions, retrying failures, sharing results, opening pages, even updating settings. This article covers how that works.

The kinds of actions Marko can do

A non-exhaustive list:

  • Marking — “mark all pending submissions” “mark the new ones in Year 9 Biology”
  • Retrying — “retry all failed submissions” “retry that one again”
  • Re-marking — “re-mark Q4 on this submission” “re-mark this entire submission”
  • Sharing — “share results with the whole class” “create a share link for Alice”
  • Navigation — “open Alice’s biology submission” “take me to last week’s assessment”
  • Settings — “open my customisation settings” “open billing”
  • Memory — “remember I prefer strict marking” “forget my marking style preference”

How it works

When you ask Marko to do something, three things happen:

  1. Marko works out what tool to use and how to call it.
  2. If the action is non-trivial (e.g. marking 27 submissions, sharing with a whole class, deleting something), Marko previews the scope and asks you to confirm before running it. See How Marko confirms before acting.
  3. The action runs and Marko tells you when it’s done.

Tips for action prompts

  • Use the scope chip. “Mark all pending” works when you’re on the right assessment — you don’t need to name the assessment.
  • Be precise about scope when it matters. “Mark every submission in the workspace” is very different from “mark all pending in this assessment” — if you’re not sure what Marko will do, ask for a preview first (“show me what’d get marked”).
  • Trust the preview. Always glance at the confirmation step — it’s the difference between a few hundred submissions and one.

What if Marko can’t do what I asked?

Marko will say so plainly. Sometimes the action isn’t supported yet, or you don’t have permission, or there’s a constraint (e.g. your plan limit). Marko’ll explain and offer a workaround where one exists.

Long-running actions

For actions that take a while — marking a big batch, generating exports — Marko kicks them off and gives you a job link to track on the Activity screen. See Tracking jobs: the Activity screen.

FAQs

Can Marko delete things?

Yes — with strong confirmation. Marko will preview what’s about to be deleted and ask explicitly. Destructive actions don’t run silently.

Can Marko spend my plan submissions?

Marking actions use your plan submissions the same way as clicking Start marking would. Marko’s preview shows how many will be used.

What if I change my mind mid-action?

Most actions can be cancelled at the preview step. Once they’ve started running, some can be cancelled from the Activity screen — see that article for which ones.
