Pass threshold and how it affects insights
The pass threshold is the mark you consider a pass on an assessment. It’s a setting you can adjust on the assessment’s Overview tab to see how the cut-off affects your class.
Where the threshold lives
On the Overview tab of an assessment, you’ll see a Pass threshold control — usually a slider or input near the distribution chart.
Drag the slider (or type in a value) and the chart and pass-rate metric update live.
What it changes
The threshold drives two things:
- Pass rate — the percentage of students at or above the threshold
- The distribution chart shading — marks below the threshold are visualised separately from marks above it
Nothing else changes — student marks themselves are unaffected.
Why this is useful
Moving the threshold is a thinking tool. Try a few values:
- The traditional pass mark (50%, or whatever your school uses)
- A mastery threshold (e.g. 80%, where you’d consider the topic confidently understood)
- A support threshold (e.g. 30%, below which students need extra help)
Each view tells you something different about the class.
Does the threshold save?
The threshold is per-assessment but isn’t persisted forever — it’s a tool for exploration. If you close the tab and come back, expect it to be at the default.

FAQs
Does the threshold affect what students see?
No. The threshold is a teacher-side analysis tool. Students see their own marks; the threshold doesn’t make a result “pass” or “fail” in any official sense.
Can I set a different threshold per subject?
The control is per-assessment, so naturally yes — just set it differently when you open each assessment.
What’s the default threshold?
Usually 50%. You can change it on any assessment.
