Pass threshold and how it affects insights
The pass threshold is the mark you consider a pass on an assessment. It’s a per-assessment setting you can adjust on the Overview tab to see how the cut-off affects your class.
Where the threshold lives
On the Overview tab of an assessment, next to the class-performance heading, you’ll see your current pass mark shown as ≥ 50% (the default) or whatever you’ve set.
To change it, click Edit. A small dialog opens with a number input — type a pass mark from 0 to 100 and click Save. Marking.ai recalculates the affected numbers on the server, and you’ll see a confirmation.
It’s a deliberate save, not a live slider — nothing changes until you click Save.
What it changes
Saving a new threshold recalculates:
- Pass rate — the percentage of submissions at or above the threshold
- Students needing support — the list of students scoring below the threshold
- Pass/fail badges — across the assessment
- Per-question pass rate — the pass-rate column on the Questions tab
The mark distribution chart is not shaded by the threshold — it’s a single colour showing the shape of the marks, and it doesn’t change when you move the cut-off. Student marks themselves are never affected either.
The threshold is saved
Your pass threshold is stored per assessment. Set it once and it’s there every time you reopen the Overview — and it applies to the Class summary as well. Set it differently on each assessment as needed.
The default, before you change anything, is 50%.
Why this is useful
Moving the threshold is a thinking tool. Try a few values:
- The traditional pass mark (50%, or whatever your school uses)
- A mastery threshold (e.g. 80%, where you’d consider the topic confidently understood)
- A support threshold (e.g. 30%, below which students clearly need extra help)
Each view tells you something different about the class.

FAQs
Does the threshold affect what students see?
No. The threshold is a teacher-side analysis tool. It doesn’t make a result “pass” or “fail” in any official sense, and it doesn’t change students’ marks.
Can I set a different threshold per assessment?
Yes — the threshold is saved per assessment, so set it however you like on each one.
What’s the default threshold?
50%. You can change it on any assessment via the Edit button.
