Save & re-mark: re-running a single question

Sometimes you’ll spot something after submissions have already been marked — a typo in the question, a missed mark-scheme detail, or a tweak that should change every student’s mark on that question. Rather than overriding the mark on every student one-by-one, you can fix the question itself and re-mark in a single click.

When to use Save & re-mark

Use Save & re-mark when a change you make should be reflected in every student’s mark for the affected question. Examples:

  • You corrected the question text
  • You updated the marks available
  • You added detail to the mark scheme — e.g. an acceptable alternative answer
  • You changed the question type or subtype

For edits that don’t need a re-mark (typo fixes that don’t affect scoring, formatting cleanup), use Save instead.

How to do it

  1. Open the assessment.
  2. Find the question you want to change and click the edit icon to open the Edit Q… dialog. See Editing extracted questions.
  3. Make your edits to the question text, marks, type, or mark scheme.
  4. Click Save & re-mark at the bottom of the dialog.

What happens next

Marking.ai kicks off a re-marking job for every submission that has an answer to this question. You’ll see:

  • A toast confirming the re-mark has started, with the number of affected answers
  • A new job on your Activity screen — see Tracking jobs: the Activity screen
  • Each affected submission flipping to a “re-marking” state while it processes

Most re-marks finish in under a minute. You can keep working in the meantime.

What gets overwritten?

Re-marking replaces:

  • The AI mark for that question on each affected submission
  • The AI rationale and feedback for that question

It does not overwrite:

  • Marks you’ve previously edited yourself (your overrides win)
  • Feedback on other questions in those submissions
  • Marks on any other question

Saving without re-marking

Clicking Save instead saves your edits to the question, but doesn’t touch any existing marks. The new question text and mark scheme will apply to future submissions only.

Use Save when you’ve found a typo, when no submissions have been marked yet, or when you want to preserve the existing marks even though the question has changed.

FAQs

Will Save & re-mark touch marks I’ve already edited?

No. Teacher-edited marks are preserved — Marking.ai only re-runs the AI on questions you haven’t already overridden.

Can I cancel a re-mark in progress?

Not mid-job, but the original marks are restored if the job fails. If you’ve changed your mind, the easiest path is to wait for it to finish and then edit any specific marks back yourself.

What if a re-mark fails for a submission?

It’ll appear on the Failed tab of the Activity screen with a one-click retry. See Retrying failed submissions in bulk.
