How submission allowances work
Marking.ai measures usage in submissions. This article explains what counts, how allowances reset, and how the different credit sources stack.
What counts as one submission
One submission = one student’s work, marked once.
- Marking a student’s biology test = 1 submission
- Re-marking the same student doesn’t count again — you don’t get charged twice for the same student
- Editing marks or feedback doesn’t count — there’s no per-edit cost
- Generating reports, exports, or share links doesn’t count
In short: submissions are spent when Marking.ai first marks a student’s work.
Three credit sources
Your balance can come from three places, and they’re combined automatically:
Trial submissions
The free 20 you start with. Don’t expire; stay on your account until you spend them. See Free trial: what’s included.
Subscription allowance
The monthly allowance of your paid plan (Starter, Pro, or Plus). Resets at the start of each billing cycle.
Top-up packs
One-off bundles you can buy. Don’t expire; stack on top of your monthly allowance. See Top-up packs.
The order things get spent
Marking.ai uses your credits in a sensible order:
- Your subscription allowance first (since it resets anyway)
- Then top-ups (because they don’t expire)
- Then trial (the original free 20)
This is automatic — you don’t have to pick which pool to spend from.
When the monthly allowance resets
Your monthly allowance resets at the start of each billing cycle (typically the same day each month). Any unused submissions from the previous cycle don’t roll over — they’re use-it-or-lose-it. Top-ups, on the other hand, do roll over forever.
What happens when you hit the cap
New marking jobs pause until you have credits available. You’ll see a modal explaining your options:
- Wait for your next monthly reset (if you’re on a subscription)
- Upgrade to a higher plan
- Buy a top-up pack for one-off extras
See Hitting your submission limit: what happens.
Where to see your balance
Your current balance is visible:
- On the Billing settings page
- In the cap-reached modal when you hit the limit
- When you ask Marko (“how many submissions do I have left?”)

FAQs
Does sharing a result use a submission?
No. Submissions are only used by marking. Sharing, exporting, and re-marking are all included with the original mark.
What if my school has a School plan?
You draw from your school’s pooled annual allowance instead of an individual monthly one. See School plans: how they work.
Do unused submissions from this month roll over?
Monthly subscription allowance doesn’t roll over. Top-ups do.
