Time-saved metric
On your home page dashboard, you’ll see a Time saved metric — an estimate of how many hours Marking.ai has saved you. This article explains how it’s calculated.
What it represents
The number is an estimate of the hours you’d have spent marking your submissions by hand, minus the time you spent reviewing in Marking.ai. It’s meant to show you the cumulative value of AI-assisted marking — not a precise measurement.
How it’s calculated
Marking.ai estimates time-per-submission based on:
- The number of questions in the assessment
- The marks available — longer answers take longer to mark
- A typical per-question marking time from teacher norms
For every submission you’ve marked, that time is added to your total. The metric doesn’t try to be exact — it’s a useful rough comparison, not an accountant’s number.
What it isn’t
- Not the time spent on the computer — we don’t track your screen time
- Not a measure of your speed — it’s a benchmark against hand-marking norms
- Not financial or contractual — don’t use this number for billing your school

- On the home page dashboard, alongside other headline metrics
- In the class summary PDF if you’ve exported one
- When you ask Marko (“how much time have I saved?”)

Can I see how this is calculated per assessment?
Not at fine detail today — the home-page number is cumulative. Per-assessment time saved is something we may surface in future.
Does editing marks affect the time saved estimate?
Minor edits don’t change much. If you re-mark whole submissions extensively, the estimate accounts for some of that time.
Why’s my time saved so small even though I’ve marked a lot?
It could be that your assessments are short, so the per-submission estimate is small. Or it could be a small workload — the number is meant to reward consistent use over time.
