My questions were extracted incorrectly

Marking.ai is good at extracting questions from papers — but not perfect. Sometimes it misses one, picks up something that isn’t a question, or gets the wording slightly wrong. This article covers what to do.

The two situations

A question was extracted but is wrong

The question shows up in your list, but the text, marks, or mark scheme is off.

Fix: click the edit icon on the question, fix what’s wrong, and click Save (or Save & re-mark if marking has already started). See Editing extracted questions.

A question is missing entirely

Marking.ai didn’t pick up a question that should be there.

Fix: unfortunately there’s no “add a question manually” button today. The best approach is:

  1. From the assessment actions menu, choose Replace marking guide or re-upload the paper itself, with a cleaner version
  2. Marking.ai re-extracts everything, including the missed question
  3. Review and confirm again

If the missing question is buried in a particular layout quirk (e.g. tiny text, an unusual table, a handwritten addition), simplifying that part of the source often resolves it.

Common extraction issues and fixes

  • A heading got picked up as a question — edit the question to empty text and zero marks, and effectively ignore it
  • Subparts merged into one question — edit the question’s text to cover only one subpart, and re-upload a paper that splits them more clearly
  • Marks-available wrong — edit and Save & re-mark if marking has started
  • Mark scheme attached to the wrong question — edit the affected questions and adjust the mark scheme entries

The “Needs review” state is your friend

Marking.ai puts every newly-created assessment into a Needs review state on purpose — so you catch extraction problems before any submissions are marked. Use that review pass thoroughly; it’s much cheaper than fixing things post-marking. See Reviewing extracted questions.

FAQs

Can I add an entirely new question after the paper was uploaded?

Not via the UI today. Re-uploading a cleaner paper is the workaround. We’re working on a more direct “add question” flow.

Will fixing a question re-mark previous submissions?

Only if you use Save & re-mark. Save just preserves your edit for future marking.

What if I confirm questions and then notice an error later?

That’s fine — you can edit questions any time, even after marking. Use Save & re-mark to update affected submissions.
