Editing AI feedback

Marking.ai writes feedback for every answer it marks, but the final say is yours. You can edit the feedback freely — tweak the tone, change the wording, add specifics, or rewrite it entirely.

Where you can edit feedback

Feedback editing lives in the Mark details workspace. Open any submission, find the question you want to change, and click into the Feedback block to start editing.

What you can do in the editor

The feedback editor supports markdown plus a formatting toolbar for the common things:

  • Bold, italic, and other text formatting
  • Lists (bulleted and numbered)
  • Headings
  • Tables
  • Equations (LaTeX)
  • Inline links

Use the toolbar above the editor for one-click formatting, or type markdown directly if you prefer.

Saving your edits

Click Save (or press the keyboard shortcut shown in the toolbar) to commit your changes. Click Cancel to discard.

What students see

When you share results with a student, they see the feedback exactly as you’ve written it. Anything you cut from the AI’s draft, they never see. Anything you added — strengths, next steps, encouragement — lands with them as your own voice.

Tips for good feedback

A few patterns that work well:

  • Lead with a strength. Even short praise (“good structure here”) helps students take the rest of the feedback in.
  • Be specific. “Good explanation of mitosis stages” lands better than “good work.”
  • Suggest a next step. A short, concrete “try this next time” prompts action.
  • Keep it warm. Feedback that sounds like you matters — the AI’s voice is fine, but yours is better.

FAQs

What if I want to start the feedback from scratch?

Select all the text in the feedback block, delete it, and write fresh. Marking.ai keeps the original AI-written version in case you change your mind, but the new text is what your students will see.

Can I include images in feedback?

Not directly in the feedback block. If you want to show a worked example or a diagram, link out to a doc or upload your annotations as part of the marking guide.

Does editing feedback affect the mark?

No — the mark and the feedback are stored separately. Editing one doesn’t touch the other.
