Asking Marko to re-mark a submission

If a submission needs to be re-marked from scratch — not just edited — you can ask Marko. This article walks through how, and, importantly, what happens to your existing marks and your submission allowance.

When to re-mark via Marko

A few scenarios:

  • The submission was marked against an old version of the marking guide and you’ve since improved it
  • Something about the original marking looks systematically off
  • You want a fresh AI pass after changing a question’s answer key or criteria

  • “Re-mark this submission” (when you’re on a submission page — the scope chip handles the rest)

What happens during a whole-submission re-mark

Re-marking a whole submission runs the same AI marker that marks a submission the first time. For each submission you ask Marko to re-mark:

  • A fresh marking run starts on the submission
  • Every question is marked again from scratch
  • New marks, rationale, and feedback replace the previous AI marks

Two things are important to know before you ask:

It consumes one submission credit

A whole-submission re-mark costs one submission credit, exactly the same as marking the submission the first time — because it runs the full marker again. If you re-mark several submissions, each one costs a credit. (Re-running a single question is different — see below — and doesn’t cost a credit.)

Your teacher overrides are deactivated

This is the big one. When a submission is re-marked, any marks you had manually overridden are deactivated: the submission shows the fresh AI mark, not your previous override. Your override isn’t deleted — it’s kept for audit — but it is no longer applied to the score.

So if you’ve spent time hand-correcting marks on a submission, re-marking will replace those corrected scores with a brand-new AI pass. If you only want to keep your corrections, don’t re-mark — edit the specific marks you want to change instead.

Does Marko show a preview first?

Yes. Because a whole-submission re-mark spends a credit and clears your overrides, Marko no longer runs it straight away. When you ask, Marko shows a confirmation card that names the student, says what the re-mark will replace, and states the cost — 1 submission credit — and then waits. Nothing runs until you click Confirm. Click Cancel and nothing is charged and nothing changes.

Once you confirm, Marko kicks off the re-mark, tells you it’s running, and reports the new total when it’s done.

Re-running a question across a whole assessment (many submissions) also shows a preview first, with a count of how many answers will be re-marked, before anything runs.

Re-running just one question

If you only want to re-mark a single question — either on one submission or across every submission in an assessment — that’s a different, lighter operation:

  • It uses the question re-mark engine, not the full submission marker
  • It does not consume a submission credit
  • In the app this is the Save & re-mark button on the question itself — see Save & re-mark: re-running a single question

You can also ask Marko: “re-mark Q4 across all submissions in this assessment.” That runs across the class and shows you a preview of how many answers it will touch before it starts.

Where whole-submission re-mark lives

Per-question re-mark is a UI flow (the Save & re-mark button in the question editor). Whole-submission re-mark is triggered through Marko — that’s the way to re-run the entire submission in one go.

What if the re-mark fails?

FAQs

Will re-marking use my submission allowance?

Yes. A whole-submission re-mark consumes one submission credit per submission — the same as the original mark, because it runs the full AI marker again. Marko states that cost on the confirmation card before anything runs, so you can cancel if you’d rather not spend it. Re-running a single question does not cost a credit.

Will my edits be kept?

Not on the score. A whole-submission re-mark deactivates your manual overrides — the fresh AI mark is shown instead. Your overrides are preserved for audit but no longer applied. If you want to keep hand-corrected marks, edit individual marks rather than re-marking the whole submission.

I only fixed one question’s answer key — do I have to re-mark the whole thing?

No. Change the question’s criteria and use Save & re-mark (or ask Marko to re-mark that question across the assessment). That re-marks just that question’s answers, doesn’t cost a credit, and leaves the rest of the submission untouched.
