Hitting your submission limit: what happens

When you’ve used up your submission allowance, Marking.ai stops new marking jobs until you’ve got credits to spend again. This article explains what you’ll see and what your options are.

The moment you run out, the next time you try to start marking Marking.ai shows you a cap-reached modal. It tells you which kind of cap you’ve hit and offers options based on your situation.

Trial cap reached

You’ve used your free trial submissions (6 on a personal email, 20 on a school or work email — plus any you earned through referrals or the educator bonus). The modal invites you to subscribe to unlock the full experience, or buy a top-up pack. Note that once your trial runs out with no subscription, the paid features step down until you subscribe or top up.

Top-up-only cap reached

You’re marking on top-ups without a subscription, and you’ve spent them all. The modal invites you to subscribe (which restores the full feature set) or buy more top-ups.

Subscription cap reached

Your monthly allowance is gone for this cycle. Importantly, you stay on your full-feature plan — Marko, summaries, insights, sharing, and bulk export all keep working. You can either:

Wait for the next reset — your allowance refreshes at the start of the next billing cycle.
Buy a top-up pack to keep marking right now (top-ups are spent after your monthly allowance).
Upgrade to a plan with a larger monthly allowance.

School pool empty

If you’re in a school workspace, the modal tells you the school’s pooled allowance is empty. Your school admin (or sales) can extend capacity.

Payment hasn’t gone through

If the cap is because your last payment failed, the modal tells you and offers a way to update billing. See Failed payments and how to fix them.

What still works when you’re at the cap

This depends on your state:

Subscriber at the monthly cap: everything except new marking keeps working — reviewing, editing, sharing, exports, and Marko all stay on. You’re still on your full plan.
Trial exhausted, or top-ups run out with no subscription: you can still review and edit existing marks and feedback, but the paid features (Marko, summaries, insights, advanced analytics, bulk export, and sharing links) are paused until you subscribe or add credits.

FAQs

What if I’m halfway through marking a class and hit the cap?

Any submissions already being marked finish. New submissions in your queue stop until you have credits. You won’t be billed for a partial batch.

Can I bypass the cap?

No — the cap is a hard limit. Your options are wait (if subscribed), top up, or upgrade.

What if my allowance reset doesn’t seem to have kicked in?
