My share link returns an error

If a student tells you a share link isn’t working, the link’s error message usually tells you what went wrong. Here’s what each one means.

The link doesn’t match any active share. Common causes:

  • The link was never created — sometimes a wrong URL gets shared by mistake
  • The submission was deleted — once a submission is gone, its share link returns this error
  • The assessment was deleted — same effect

Fix: generate a fresh share link from the submission (if it still exists). See Sharing a marked submission with a student.

The link was valid but has passed its expiry date.

Fix: open the share dialog and regenerate the link. The new link gets the default expiry from your settings. See Share link expiry and privacy controls.

To prevent this in future, set a longer default expiry in Settings → Customisation.

The link was deliberately revoked — either by you, or by someone with access to your account.

Fix: if the revocation was a mistake, generate a fresh link. If it was intentional, the student doesn’t have access for a reason — confirm before reissuing.

Step-by-step recovery

If you’re not sure which case you’re in:

  1. Open the relevant submission’s share dialog from the submissions table
  2. Look at the status of the existing link — Active, Expired, or Revoked
  3. If the link is in a bad state, click Regenerate to create a fresh one
  4. Share the new link with your student

FAQs

Most likely it expired overnight, or someone (maybe you accidentally) revoked it. Regenerate and reshare.

Only their own marks and feedback for that one submission. They can’t see other students or other assessments.

Everyone who clicks it sees only that one student’s results. It’s not a security hole — the link doesn’t expose other students’ data.
