Tracking a student's progress over time
Marking.ai keeps every mark a student has received across your assessments in one place. The student detail page is where you look at that history and spot trends.
Getting to the student
Open a student from the Students list in the sidebar — click their name to go to their detail page.
You’ll also reach the same progress view from the Students needing support list on an assessment’s Overview tab, where clicking a name opens their progress chart in a dialog.
The Overview tab
The student detail page opens on the Overview tab, with three summary cards:
- Submissions — how many submissions this student has
- Counted average — their average across marked submissions
- Latest mark — their most recent result, with a small trend arrow (↑ up, → flat, ↓ down)
Below the cards, Progress over time plots their marks on marked submissions, oldest first — each point is one assessment.
How the trend arrow works
The trend arrow needs at least three marked submissions. It compares the latest mark against the average of the two before it:
- ↑ up — the latest mark is more than 2 percentage points above that recent average
- ↓ down — more than 2 percentage points below
- → flat — within 2 points either way
That ±2-point band is deliberate — it stops small wiggles from flipping the trend. With fewer than three marked submissions there’s no trend arrow yet.
Filtering by subject
If the student has submissions across more than one subject, a Subject filter appears above the tabs. Different subjects aren’t directly comparable, so filtering to one subject gives a cleaner read — it narrows both the summary cards and the progress chart. The filter only shows when there’s more than one subject to choose from.
The Assessments tab
The Assessments tab lists every submission the student has, with:
- Assessment — links to the assessment
- Status — marked, processing, failed, and so on
- Mark and %
- Date
- Review — a direct link to that submission’s mark details
Useful when you want to jump straight into a particular result.
Trend interpretation tips
- Small changes are noise. The trend only moves when the shift clears the 2-point band.
- Different assessments test different things. A drop isn’t always a regression — it could just be a tougher paper. Cross-reference with the class average on that assessment.
- Use the chart to ask questions, not draw conclusions. It’s a prompt to look closer, not a verdict.

FAQs
Why is the trend flat when the last mark was clearly better?
The trend only moves when the latest mark clears 2 percentage points above the average of the previous two. A modest uptick stays flat by design — look at the chart for the actual shape.
How many submissions do I need before the chart and trend appear?
The progress chart draws with any marked submissions (even a single point). The trend arrow needs at least three.
Can I export a student’s progress chart?
Not directly — but the underlying marks are in any submission report you export, and you can pull class-level data via CSV. See Exporting class data and marks (CSV).
