Tracking a student's progress over time
Marking.ai keeps the marks a student has received across every assessment in one place. The student detail page is where you can look at that history and spot trends.
This article shows you what’s there.
Getting to the student
Click any student’s name in:
- The Students list in the sidebar
- A submissions table on an assessment
- A misconception card or students-needing-support list
- A Marko response (“show me Alice”)
The progress chart
On the Overview tab of the student detail page, you’ll see a chart of the student’s marks across recent assessments — each point is one assessment.
Alongside the chart, you’ll see:
- Average mark across all marked assessments
- Latest mark
- Trend — a quick “up”, “flat”, or “down” indicator based on the recent direction
Filtering by subject
If the student is in your class across multiple subjects, the trend can be misleading — different subjects aren’t directly comparable. Use the filter at the top of the chart to view one subject at a time for a cleaner read.
The assessments tab
The Assessments tab on the same page lists every assessment the student has a submission for, with their mark, percentage, and a direct link to that submission’s Mark details workspace. Useful when you want to dig into a particular result.
Trend interpretation tips
A few things to keep in mind:
- Small changes are noise. The trend label only moves when the change is clearly above or below the recent average — small wiggles are flat.
- Different assessments test different things. A drop from one assessment to the next isn’t always a regression — it could just be a tougher paper. Cross-reference with the class average on that assessment.
- Use the chart to ask questions, not draw conclusions. It’s a prompt to look closer, not a verdict.

FAQs
Why is my student’s trend showing as flat when their last mark was clearly better?
The trend only moves when the change is clearly above the recent average. A single uptick doesn’t flip the trend on its own. Look at the chart for the actual shape.
Can I export a student’s progress chart?
Not directly — but the underlying data is in any Submission report you export, and you can grab class-level data via CSV. See Exporting class data and marks (CSV).
Does this work if a student has only one assessment in Marking.ai?
The chart needs at least two marked submissions to draw a trend. With one, you’ll just see that single mark.
