How your data is protected

Teachers trust Marking.ai with confidential student work. We take that seriously. This article gives you a plain-English overview of how we look after your data.

In short

  • Your data is stored on secure cloud infrastructure with industry-standard encryption
  • Files are encrypted in transit (HTTPS) and at rest
  • Access is scoped to your account — only you can see your assessments, submissions, and marks (with school workspace exceptions noted below)
  • We never sell your data and never train public AI models on student work

Encryption

Everything Marking.ai stores — uploaded files, marks, feedback, settings — is encrypted at rest. Connections between your browser and our servers use HTTPS encryption.

Access controls

Your Marking.ai account data is private to you. Other teachers, including those in the same school workspace, can’t see your assessments, your students, or your feedback.

What we do with student work

Uploaded student work is used to:

  • Mark it (the core purpose)
  • Train and improve Marking.ai’s marking quality, in aggregated, de-identified ways only
  • Generate the reports and exports you request

We don’t use student work to train public AI models, sell it to third parties, or expose it to other users.

Backups and uptime

Marking.ai data is backed up regularly. Should anything happen to our primary database, backups let us recover without losing your work. Our infrastructure is hosted on cloud providers with strong uptime guarantees.

Compliance

Marking.ai aims to comply with the data protection standards relevant to schools — GDPR in the UK and EU, FERPA in the US (where applicable), and equivalents elsewhere. For the formal policy, see our privacy policy at the bottom of marking.ai.

Reporting a security issue

If you spot a security issue — anything that looks like it shouldn’t be visible, working that way, or sharing data — email us straight away at connect@marking.ai with the details. We take security reports seriously and respond quickly.

Where is my data stored?

Do you sell data to third parties?

No. We don’t sell student work, teacher data, or any user information.

Will Marking.ai train AI on my class’s work?

We use aggregated, de-identified data to improve Marking.ai’s marking quality. Individual student work isn’t used to train any public-facing model.
