Asking Marko to change a mark or edit a question
Marko doesn’t only tell you about marks — it can change them. You can ask Marko to override a specific mark, re-weight a question, fix a question’s answer key, or flag a submission for review. This article covers each, and when Marko checks with you first.
Overriding a single mark
If you disagree with an AI mark on one answer, ask Marko to set it to the value you want:
- “Set Alice’s Q3 to 4 out of 5”
- “Override this mark to 8”
- “Give her full marks on Q2 — she showed the working”
Marko applies your value, records it as a teacher override (with an optional short reason if you give one), and re-totals the submission so both the submission view and the submissions list show the new total straight away. Marko will restate the new total back to you.
A few details worth knowing:
- The value has to be between 0 and the question’s maximum. Decimals are fine for partial credit (e.g. 17.5).
- This runs directly — no confirmation card — because it’s a single, targeted, easily-checked change.
- Your override is exactly the same as changing the mark yourself in the mark details. It sticks until you change it again — except if you re-mark the whole submission, which deactivates overrides (see Asking Marko to re-mark a submission).
Changing a question’s total marks
If a question’s maximum is wrong — say Q3 should be worth 10 so the paper totals 60 — ask Marko to change it:
- “Make Q3 worth 10 marks”
- “Change question 5 to be out of 8”
This edits the question’s maximum (not any student’s awarded mark, and not the answer key). Because it re-totals every existing submission against the new maximum, Marko shows you a preview first: the new assessment total, and a heads-up if any already-marked answers now score above the new maximum. Confirm to apply, or cancel if the scope looks off.
Editing a question’s answer key or criteria
If the AI is marking against the wrong answer — a mis-keyed multiple-choice question, say, or criteria that need tightening — ask Marko to fix the criteria:
- “The answer to Q2 is C, not B — fix it”
- “Update the marking criteria for Q4 to require units”
Marko updates the question’s answer key / criteria — the authoritative text the AI marks against (it takes priority over the marking-guide PDF). By default this applies to future marks; existing marks are left as they are until you re-mark.
If you want to apply it to work already marked, say so — “…and re-mark all the answers” — and Marko will re-mark every existing answer for that question with the new key in the same action. Re-running a single question this way does not consume a submission credit. Either way, Marko shows a preview first: the new key, and how many answers will be re-marked.
Flagging a submission for review
If you want to come back to a submission later, ask Marko to flag it:
- “Flag this submission for review”
This marks every answer on the submission as requiring review, which surfaces it in your review views. Because it touches every answer on the submission, Marko confirms first, showing how many answers it will flag.
If you say something ambiguous like “flag any I should review,” Marko will check whether you want a list of things to look at (just reading) or to actually set the flag (this action) before doing anything.

FAQs
Does overriding a mark cost a submission credit?
No. Overriding a mark, changing a question’s marks, or editing an answer key don’t cost credits. Only re-marking a whole submission does.
Will my override survive a re-mark?
No. Re-marking a whole submission deactivates overrides — the fresh AI mark is shown, and your override is kept for audit but no longer applied. If you want to keep a corrected mark, don’t re-mark the whole submission.
Can Marko write me new feedback?
Not as a drop-in writer today. Marko can change marks and criteria, but the per-question feedback text comes from the marking engine — you can edit it yourself, and re-marking regenerates it.
