Editing a mark
Every mark in Marking.ai is editable. If you read a mark and disagree, you can change it in a couple of clicks. This article walks you through it.
Where you can edit a mark
Mark editing lives in the Mark details workspace. Click any submission row in your submissions table to open it.
Each question on the page shows the awarded mark (e.g. “4/5”). Click the mark value to enter edit mode.
Making the change
Type the new mark and press Enter (or click outside the field) to save. Your edit replaces the AI’s mark immediately. The total at the top of the page updates to reflect the change.
What changes after you edit
A few things happen behind the scenes:
- The mark is flagged as teacher-overridden so it’s clear later that you stepped in
- The AI’s original mark and rationale are kept — you can always see what it had before
- The student’s total recalculates automatically
- Any class-level metrics (averages, distributions) update on the assessment’s Overview tab
Editing many marks at once
If you’ve spotted a systematic issue (for example, the mark scheme guidance for a question wasn’t clear enough), it’s usually better to fix the question itself and re-mark, rather than overriding student-by-student. Open the question’s edit dialog and use Save & re-mark — see Save & re-mark: re-running a single question.
Can I exceed the maximum marks?
No. If you try to enter a mark above the maximum available for that question, the input will reject the value. If the maximum itself is wrong, edit the question’s marks available instead — see Editing extracted questions.

FAQs
Will my edits show up to the student?
Yes — once you share results with the student, they see your edited marks (not the AI’s originals). Your edits are always the source of truth.
Can I undo a mark edit?
Click the mark again to put it back. If you’ve forgotten what the AI originally awarded, you can see it in the edit history for the question.
Does editing a mark affect the AI’s reasoning?
No — the AI’s rationale stays the same when you change the mark. If you’d rather rewrite the rationale to match your new mark, just edit the feedback block; see Editing AI feedback.
