Adding students individually

Most students get created automatically when you upload submissions, but you can also add students by hand — useful for setting up a class in advance, or for adding students who haven’t submitted work yet.

This article shows you how.

Opening the new student dialog

  1. Click Students in the left-hand sidebar.
  2. At the top of the page, click the New student button.
  3. The New student dialog opens.

What you can enter

  • Full name (required) — e.g. “Alice Johnson”. This is what shows everywhere in the app and on shared reports.
  • Year (optional) — the year group or grade your student is in. Useful for filtering and bulk actions.
  • Classes (optional) — type a class name and press Enter to add it. You can add multiple classes per student. New class names are created on the fly.
  • Email (optional) — the student’s contact email. You only need this if you plan to share results with them directly.
  • Student ID (optional) — your school’s internal student ID, useful when you export marks to a gradebook.

Saving

Click Create student to save. The new student appears in your students list immediately and can be linked to submissions right away.

What if I’m setting up lots of students at once?

For a class or year group, the bulk CSV import is much faster than the one-by-one form. See Bulk-importing students via CSV.

FAQs

Do I have to add students manually before uploading submissions?

No. Marking.ai creates student records automatically when it can extract a name from an uploaded submission. Manual adding is only useful if you want to set them up in advance.

Can I edit a student after creating them?

Yes — click the student in your list to open their detail page, or use Edit student from the actions menu. See Editing, merging, and archiving students.

What’s a class?

A class is a group of students you teach together — e.g. “10B Biology”. You can add a student to multiple classes, and use the class to filter, bulk-assign, or scope your view in the app. See Creating and managing classes.
