The onboarding walkthrough
The first time you sign in to Marking.ai, you’re greeted by Marko, your AI assistant. Marko walks you through a quick setup, marks your first assessment with you, and then asks a few questions to tailor the experience to how you teach.
The whole flow takes about 10 minutes — and by the end you’ll have your first marked submission to look at.
Here’s what to expect.
What happens during onboarding
Onboarding is a chat-style conversation with Marko in the centre of your screen. You answer in your own words (or by picking from suggested options) and the experience adapts as you go.
Step 1: Introduce yourself
Marko starts by asking your full name — first name and surname. This gets used across the app and on shared reports.
Step 2: Set your feedback preferences
Next, Marko asks how you’d like AI-generated feedback to be structured for your students, plus what language dialect to use (for example, British English or US English).
These settings have a big effect on the tone and shape of the feedback your students see. Don’t worry about getting this perfect now — you can change either at any time from Settings → Customisation.
Step 3: Upload your first assessment
Marko then asks you to upload your first assessment paper. This is the test or exam you’d like to mark, along with the marking guide or rubric you want Marking.ai to mark against.
Step 4: Upload a student submission
After that, Marko asks for one student’s work for the assessment you just uploaded. You can upload more later — for now, just one submission is enough to get you to your first mark.
Step 5: Marking gets started
As soon as the submission is in, Marko kicks off the marking job in the background. You’ll see a banner letting you know your first marking job is on its way.
Step 6: Tell Marko a bit more about you
While the marking runs, Marko uses the time to ask a few quick questions to tailor your experience:
- Your role — classroom teacher, head of department, tutor, etc.
- Your school or organisation
- Your curriculum or qualification framework — for example, AQA, IB, or the Australian Curriculum
- The subjects you teach
- What you’re hoping Marking.ai will help with
You can skip any of these and come back to them later — none are required, and they only exist to help Marking.ai work better for you.
Step 7: View your first marked submission
Once marking finishes, Marko shows you a banner with a View results button. Click it to open the Mark details workspace and see your first marked submission.
Can I skip onboarding?
Yes. There’s a Skip onboarding option at the bottom-left of the screen. If you click it, Marko confirms you want to skip and takes you straight to the home page.
If you skip before uploading an assessment, you can still come back and start one any time — click Start marking from your home page.
What if I close the tab partway through?
Don’t worry — your progress is saved. When you come back to Marking.ai you’ll pick up where you left off.
